To ALL SCPA Members,
May marked the beginning of the real budget war and your SCPA Board wants to thank all of you who have been fighting in the trenches with us. This year has to mark the beginning of a new era where all Probation Departments stand up and state “enough is enough.” It is time we fight for and receive our proper recognition. Sacramento has become ground zero in this movement and we must lead the way. As the June Budget hearings approach, we must continue to surge forward and keep the pressure on the Board of Supervisors to make the right decisions no matter how hard they may be. On May 20, 2010 we filed our lawsuit against the County in order to compel them to fund Probation at least to the levels of our mandates under the law. This is an unprecedented suit and is the first of its kind in the State of California and possibly in the Country. We stand confident behind this suit and only ask that the laws we have sworn to uphold, be upheld by those who control our resources. The only way for Probation to be acknowledged as the critical Criminal Justice Link we are, is for us to stand up and demand it. We have been quite for far too long and it is time for our voice to be heard.
Our Education/Budget Campaign is in full swing and the final phases are scheduled to be implemented in the next couple of weeks. I will keep all of you informed as each new phase is put into action. We have a new batch of flyers that we will be asking each of you to again disperse to the community. It is crucial that we drive as many people in the County to our website www.keepsacsafe.com in order to build the strongest coalition possible. This coalition will be critical not only for this budget cycle but for all future budget cycles as well. Through education we can position ourselves to no longer be the soft spot the county goes after every time financial times are hard.
Although we are in uncharted waters and we cannot foresee the future, I stand confident behind the resolve and determination of this Membership. With all that we have been through and the monumental achievements we have succeeded in gaining over the past couple of years, I know that this membership is better equipped to lead this fight then any other Probation Membership is. Through your leadership we can change the face of Probation throughout the State.
The Board of Supervisors Budget hearings will begin on Monday, June 14, 2010 at 0930 hours. Our department is scheduled to present fourth on the agenda behind the Sheriff, D.A, and Correctional Health. We need as many members as possible at this hearing to speak. Please turn in your time off requests as soon as possible so you can have your voice heard. The Chief stated that he would do his best to accommodate time off for any member willing to attend.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your continued exemplary level of professionalism and dedication during such trying times. It is truly an honor and privilege to serve you.
Respectfully,
Greg Stuber – SCPA President
